The campus opened under the name Lamar Junior High School in 1955.[2] The school is named after Mirabeau B. Lamar, a hero of the Texas Revolution and second president of the Republic of Texas.
Per Texas Education Agency data, 660 students attended Lamar in the 2009-2010 school year. Boys (52%) slightly predominated over girls (48%). By ethnicity, 45.4% were Hispanic, 38.7% white, and 12.4% African American. The 6th grade intake was less than in previous years, at 174 students, of whom 46% were white, 44% Hispanic and 9.7% African American. [3].
The school's ethnic breakdown differed from the ethnic breakdown of the surrounding Allandale and Brentwood neighborhoods. Both neighborhoods are in the 78757 zip code area, which is 63.2% white and 19.6% Hispanic. [4]. Austin ISD data for 2009-2010 showed 633 students attending. Of these, 297 lived within 2 miles of the school.
The school received an academically acceptable rating from the Texas Education Agency in 2010. [5]
In 2010, the Lamar school administration and PTA supported an initiative to designate Lamar as a Fine Arts Academy. [6] Lamar Middle School has been recognized as a Fine Arts Academy by the Austin ISD, and will begin offering an accelerated fine arts curriculum in the 2012/2013 school year.[7]
The Lamar PTA organized a Safe Routes to School program in 2009 to encourage walking and biking to the school. The SRTS committee completed a five-year plan for 2010-2014 in October 2010, which seeks to increase the number of children who walk or bike from 18% to 33% during that time. [8] In October 2010, Sustainable Neighborhoods of North Central Austin and surrounding residents implemented part of the SRTS plan by planting a grove of trees to cool a sidewalk near the intersection of Burnet Rd and 2222. [9]
LamarFest is a carnival event held each November at Lamar to encourage community involvement in the school. The event is generally announced on neighborhood listservs and in neighborhood publications like the Allandale Reporter
